7-Up Sentences

This week we learned how to write 7-Up Sentences during Language Arts.
A 7-Up Sentence is one that is seven words or more, but we discussed the importance of adding quality words and not just creating long, run-on sentences. We did a variety of writing exercises both individually and also working with a small group.
When we were finished learning about 7-Up Sentences, everyone got to enjoy a refreshing taste of 7-Up as they completed their work.

Learn, We Did

On Friday we had lots of fun celebrating the color GREEN! We piggy-backed on top of one of Kindergarten's color days and all students were encouraged to wear green. We learned about "being green", what it means if someone "is green" and talked about different shades of green.
The grand finale of our day of green was enjoying a very special treat - Yoda Soda - and learning to draw Yoda, which coincidentally happened right after we received a voice mail from the Jedi Master himself! Click the above clip to hear the message.

It was a fun way to finish off a week of hard work and learning!

Crystals

Observing Intently!
This morning we started our second science experiment of the year. We discussed the the scientific method and began a lab report which we will complete later this week. Our problem today: What happens when we mix epsom salt with water? What happens when the water evaporates?
Every student got a chance to mix the epsom salt and water solution. They worked cooperatively  preparing the investigation, but worked independently on their hypothesis and the lab report. We are very eager to see what will happen overnight!

Classroom Salad

Last week we made a Classroom Salad. This is a photo of the ingredients we used. Each ingredient symbolized something important to the classroom.
After a class discussion, we made the salad and every student got to try it. Then they completed a writing activity about symbolism and classroom climate.
One question: Why do you suppose a rotten banana was one of the ingredients in our Classroom Salad? Did we add it? Please be sure to ask your 2nd grader about the symbolism of the rotten banana!

Getting To Know You!

Every student remember to do the Thursday night homework and brought in a colorfully decorated "Getting to Know You" bag Thursday morning.
By Friday afternoon each student had presented his or her bag and I think we all learned at least one new thing about our classmates. Graded bags were sent home Friday.
